2020 (Text in Gray Scale)

Quilt Name: Typography

Typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader. Typography involves font, style, appearance, and structure, which aims to elicit certain emotions and convey specific messages. In short, typography is what brings the text to life. This quilt aptly titled Typography represents the collective contribution of Seattle MQG members. The variations and characteristic fonts and typefaces are representative of the artistic diversity and individuality of the members in the guild. They routinely come together for seemingly simple tasks of the current day quilt making process. However, it is this process that ultimately binds them together as they share the finished quilts and in turn the stories behind them with one another.

2019 (Small Piecing)

Quilt Name: The Last Hurrah

For our quilt, we jumped right into the small piecing and between the two Seattle MQG Giving Committee Chairs, 18 yards of fabric was cut into 1-inch by 6-inch strips! We shared those strips with the guild in little baggies of 18 pieces each. Guild members sewed them back together into 185 rectangles. Then the Giving Committee Chairs cut the rectangles into diamonds and pieced them into hexagons! The design for The Last Hurrah was inspired by an antique quilt made of hand pieced diamonds from guild president Matt Macomber’s antique quilt collection. With the design taking inspiration from the antique quilt, the color inspiration from the MQG, and the design goals of small piecing, we created a truly modern quilt.

2017 (Scale)

Quilt Name: Scaleline

This quilt was inspired by a line doodle where lines of varying thicknesses were arranged in block-like shapes with the lines overlapping at different angles. A limited range of colors was selected from this year’s charity quilt color palette, using light gray as the background and three colors of cross weave cotton for the piecing and bias tape applique.

Guild members pieced together strip sets at our annual guild holiday party that were then assembled into sections and overlaid with bias tape of different widths. The quilting was kept to a simple straight line design that echoed the piecing and bias tape to keep the focus of the quilt’s minimalist design and on the shapes and depth created by the blocks of overlapping lines.
